Trailers are shown in lot of places which gives a wide coverage for the release. Examples of where the film is shown is at the cinema, on TV, on the radio and through posters.
Dedicated trailer sites and film websites often display film trailers that are displayed have been cut for a wider, general audience and suitable for any ages. On the other hand, trailers shown in the cinema are usually a similar type of film as the one being played at the cinema.
I believe that when people are watching TV they do not usually concentrate during adverts as they would be able to skip them and if this would not be possible then there would be other distractions around like your mobile phone or people to talk to. Whereas, in cinemas you would not have any distractions as you are not permitted your mobile phone. Cinemas offer a much more intense experience and so the people there are more likely to focus on the trailer as it would be the only thing they could watch. Finally, the trailers that cinemas show would be related to the film that is being screen. This means that the audience will pay more attention to what they are watching and it will have a bigger impact on them. Adverts shown on the TV do not have any relation to a specific audience and so are less likely to pay close detail to it.
